Councillor Simon Henig, Leader of Durham County Council, today gave his blessing to the Festival. "We're delighted that LUMIERE is coming back to Durham this year and very pleased to be able to support it. In 2009, we saw not only how culture can bring people together but, just as importantly, how events like this can benefit the local economy. And as the countdown to LUMIERE 2011 begins, it is exciting to hear more about how Durham will be transformed by this year's event. I am sure LUMIERE 2011 will further cement Durham's position as a major cultural destination." Councillor Henig added that the funds for LUMIERE have come from the performance reward grant awarded to the previous LAA partnership in recognition of the improvements made in the county. Performance reward grants were set up under the previous Government as a way of rewarding councils for meeting centrally set targets.
