My heart leaps up when I behold
A rainbow in the sky:
So was it when my life began;
So is it now I am a man;
So be it when I shall grow old,
Or let me die!...
My Heart Leaps Up, William Wordsworth, 1802
Rainbows have a unique ability to lift the spirits even on the gloomiest day and have inspired countless literary, musical and artistic works. They appear when the sun's light shines through droplets of moisture in the atmosphere from rain, mist and dew, projecting a spectrum of colour seemingly in distinctive bands. Because the human visual perception of colour is poor in dark conditions, we normally only see rainbows in the daylight.
Newcastle design studio Deadgood invite you to see this optical wonder in the dark of a November evening. Their Rainbow will be created using the existing scaffolding surrounding Prebends Bridge to support over 250 specialist pieces of lighting equipment that will shine the full spectrum of colours down onto the walkway, creating a visual delight that will immerse you in colour. Stroll through the rainbow and soak yourself in light …
